She’s all right, but she ain’t no Felicia.Īt first I was like, “Oh no! Not another palette swap!” But she’s actually not just a gray Miss Fortune! She is her own sprite with different animations and attacks! The bad guys created her, but she also has a lot of funny lines that she delivers in a monotone robotic voice, like “In case you haven’t noticed, I am a robot,” and “This was a triumph.” Since she’s also a cat, she can also wrap fighters in a ball of yarn and bat it around like cats do. She stole a gem called the Life Gem, and when mobsters from the Medici gang cut her into pieces, she still lives but can throw her head around as a weapon when she fights. 2! The graphics are all shades of blue and she even wears a nightcap with an F on it and everything! It’s all Filia’s dream, and it shows her sleeping in bed that’s a direct reference to the ending of Super Mario Bros. But the way Fukua’s story starts out is pretty funny. Usually you fight a few guys and then the boss, but for Fukua, you fight half the roster, then the boss, then the other half and then the last boss is a super hard version of Filia that I couldn’t beat. Same moves for the most part and everything. One bad thing about SkullGirls is that it’s guilty of having different characters just are just palette swaps of other characters, but luckily it doesn’t happen often. Because of this, I was able to beat the last boss with this character. If you look closely, you can see her headband is actually teeth and eyes! Her parasite’s name is Samson. Maybe she’s going to police school? Anyway, like Squigly, she has a talking parasite thing attached to her hair. They’re muscled up versions of ancient Egyptian gods Anubis and a bird hieroglyph.Īt first I thought she was a police officer but she’s actually a school girl in a uniform. But it turns out she’s a scary mean demon that can turn into a skeleton as her true form! Lesson here is to not judge a book by its cover! And she’s really mean and killed off my favorite character in the story mode! I do like her two goons, though. And he is one of the few characters I can beat the game with! So yeah, he’s awesome!Īt first I thought I’d like her because she looks like a pretty Egyptian lady. But instead of mechanical parts, he was rebuilt with musical instruments! So he fights with saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and others. He’s one of my favorite characters! He’s like a film noir detective, but he was badly hurt in an accident so he was rebuilt with parts. And Squigly is one of the ones I couldn’t beat the last boss with so that’s all I can say about her! So I could beat the story mode with some characters but not others because the last boss is so hard and/or cheap. But it turns out she’s really a zombie and her string thing is actually a talking parasite demon guy. Anyway, I first thought Squigly was a puppet, as she has a string thing around her and her mouth is sewn shut and she just communicates via thoughts. SkullGirls would make a great cartoon, albeit a very mature one. Also, the game has a dark art deco 1920’s theme, and kind of reminds me of Batman: The Animated Series. And that’s why most of the characters you can play as are female. If a girl or woman touches it, they’ll get their wish granted, but it comes with some consequences, too. So the main reason why all these fighters are beating each other up is to take control of the Skull Heart. Some slight story spoilers here and there, just to warn you, but the game HAS been out since 2012. So when that happens, I usually like to write a blog about the characters, and so we’ll do that here. And usually they aren’t in fighting games. Almost on par with fighters like BlazBlue and Guilty Gear! I was very impressed with the creativity of the characters and even the storylines in the Story Mode were pretty interesting. But I got my chance when it came out on the Switch! For what’s considered an indie game, this one is very good. It’s a 2-D one-on-one fighter with cartoony graphics and I’ve been wanting to review it since 2012 when it came out, but for whatever reasons I wasn’t able to. Recently I reviewed SkullGirls: 2 nd Encore. Hit Next and the installation will begin. It might be distracting to some viewers, but like the film’s many Dutch angles, the cinematography serves a purpose: they constantly remind us that the world and its characters are all distorted and crooked. Much like the film’s menagerie of characters, No Sudden Move’s aesthetics are full of charming quirks the wide shots are extremely w i d e, and there’s an interesting fisheye distortion that the lenses’ give to the film. Soderbergh shot the film himself using period-accurate lenses (Meike Cine Lenses, we believe) to create the illusion that the film was shot during the 50s. From the first frame, until the very last shot, we were enamored by the film’s visual look. And yet No Sudden Move feels like one of Soderbergh’s richer texts, a film that folks will “discover” down the road and hold up as one of his finer efforts thanks not only to his incisive direction and Solomon’s sharp script, but for what it has to say about this damn, damned country. The first thing you’ll notice about No Sudden Move is that it’s absolutely beautiful to look at. It’s a mid-budget crime-thriller for adults that really has no place in the blockbuster-dominated marketplace, especially where people are probably hungry for the escapism rather than films that hammer home socioeconomic inequality where even criminals can’t find a way to break the social order. Perhaps it’s not too surprising that the film, despite its star-studded pedigree, is headed to HBO Max rather than theaters. I don’t want to spoil anything beyond that other than to say that Solomon and Soderbergh are aware the game is rigged, and that biting attitude feels far more apt for our current age even though the film is set in the post-war “era of good feelings” (note: good feelings may only apply to white people who consciously ignore everyone outside of their racial and class spheres). No Sudden Move is all about how the game is played, and it has an understanding that crime doesn’t pay unless you’re in charge of all crime. All the backstabbing and double-crosses can be a bit exhausting, but the culmination is so satisfying that it doesn’t really matter that we’re not emotionally attached to these despicable characters trying to claw out an existence. It’s also a movie that gets better the longer it goes until its third act reveals the themes that the whole picture has been headed towards. The historical and social commentary is unmissable (the film isn’t set in Detroit on accident and pointedly knocks “urban renewal” as just a euphemism for removing anyone who isn’t white from the city), and gives the movie a texture to let you know that while Soderbergh is no stranger to crime stories, this is far more Traffic than Ocean’s Eleven. No Sudden Move, with its unique angles, mahogany hues, and gorgeous lighting makes for a singular period piece that draws us further into a world that feels like the post-war era with the varnish stripped off. He may not always hit it out of the park ( The Laundromat and Let Them All Talk serving as recent examples), but he’ll rebound just as quickly showing that he’s got creativity and style to spare ( Logan Lucky and High Flying Bird also serving as recent examples). Soderbergh has reached the point in his career where I think we’re taking him for granted. This kind of unrelenting bitterness and cynicism may be off-putting to some viewers, but in Soderbergh’s hands it goes down like a stiff drink. No Sudden Move constantly tells us that trust may be a foundation, but it’s a weak and brittle one people typically act for their own enrichment until they’re so powerful they no longer need to pay attention to money changing hands. We can see the consequences of Matt’s actions (his infidelity makes him a weak link to get the document) through the unfolding horror in the faces of his wife Mary ( Amy Seimetz) and children Matthew ( Noah Jupe) and Peggy ( Lucy Holt). Before the film has even completed its first act we know that Ronald and Vanessa are cheating together and that Matt is also stepping out on his wife with secretary Paula ( Frankie Shaw). Almost everyone is acting in his or her own self-interest with the most sacred bond-family-repeatedly shattered. This is not a movie about camaraderie and friendship but about short-lived mutual interest. You're not supposed to, and probably you don't have much confidence, and you do think you're a little piece of shit or else you wouldn't have gotten a rock band together in the first place. You're not supposed to go on stage and say, "I'm small and I have no confidence and think I'm a shit." Because you just can't do that on stage. The tradition of is that you're supposed to be kind of cocky and sure of yourself. So you say, 'That guy has a lot of bottle. In England, to say somebody has a lot of ass they have a lot of funk. The way Cockney rhyming slang works is the word you're really saying rhymes with the second word. Hynde got the idea for the song's title when, during an after-show dinner, she overheard someone enquiring if anyone had "Picked up dry cleaning? Any brass in pocket?" Of the song's reference to "bottle," Hynde explained, "Bottle is Cockney rhyming slang. Musically, Hynde described the song as "trying to be a Motown song, but it didn't quite get it." Hynde then recorded the part with a tape recorder and wrote the song's lyric. With that in mind, it’s probably just as well its author’s stance towards it has softened in more recent years."Brass in Pocket" originated as a guitar line that James Honeyman-Scott played for Chrissie Hynde. Now hailed as one of the best Pretenders songs, its stratospheric success rapidly changed the game for the group, as it provided the springboard for their self-titled debut album to top the UK charts for four consecutive weeks and to penetrate the heart of the Billboard 200 in the US, where it landed in the Top 10 on its way to going platinum.Ī veritable string of classic Chrissie Hynde-penned hits have since ensured Pretenders’ place among the best rock bands of all time, but while the group now have an enviable catalogue to pull setlists from, their fans will always want to hear them perform Brass In Pocket. Not only did the song become the first new UK No.1 of the 80s, it went to No.2 in Australia and also cracked the US Top 20. Released as a single in November 1979, Brass In Pocket’s commercial performance soon bore this out. Ultimately, though, the song’s enigma factor worked in its favour, and when Hynde’s sensual vocal delivery aligned to perfection with Honeyman-Scott’s chiming guitars and the supplest of grooves, Pretenders had a classic pop song which – as its kiss-off line would have it – was simply “special, so special”. Superficially, much of Brass In Pocket’s lyric was equally arcane, with Hynde throwing in obscure references to everything from Cockney rhyming slang (“got bottle”) to a style of driving with the window down, in the line “Detroit leaning”. If I’d imagined it was going to be such a hit, I might have been a little less abstract.” “We had dinner afterwards and one of their guys leaned across the table and said to another, ‘Did you take my trousers to the dry cleaners? Was there any brass in the pocket?’ It was a turn of phrase that describes someone who is doing alright, financially. “We supported a band on our label called Strangeways, on tour in the north of England,” Hynde wrote in the sleevenotes for Pretenders’ Pirate Radio box set. However, even if they caught the phrase “brass in pocket”, many casual listeners wouldn’t necessarily have understood what Hynde was singing about. Rather than rely on a traditional chorus, Honeyman-Scott’s guitar figure provided the song’s hook, and, unlike with most hit records, its title only featured once in the lyric. I wish I’d done it more.” “If I’d imagined it was going to be a hit, I might have been less abstract”įrom a songwriter’s point of view, Brass In Pocket eschewed the accepted rules in terms of structure. “I just happened to have a little tape recorder, and I taped it. Honeyman-Scott had devised the opening guitar riff: “He was playing that in the studio and I thought, Wow, that’s awesome,” Hynde recalled. It sprang from a collaboration with the band’s original lead guitarist, James Honeyman-Scott, who passed away from a drug overdose in June 1982. Unlike most of the songs gracing Pretenders’ marvellous self-titled debut album, Brass In Pocket wasn’t written solely by Hynde. Send MIDI Notes to trigger light effects.
